Is Youth Homelessness Going Up or Down?

A tally from the Department of Education, released in January, showed that more than 1.5 million students enrolled in public schools nationwide were homeless during the 2017-18 academic year, a 15 percent increase over the 2015-16 school year. It was the highest number ever recorded — and the largest share of the overall public school student population in at least a decade.
